At the Threshold

From SPARCinLA : To our beloved Los Angeles community,
We are here for you, and we hope that we may offer you some light amidst all the devastation that has occurred this past week. We at SPARC remain committed to our mission of fostering community and connection through art.

In that spirit, we invite you to the Durón Gallery to view our newest exhibition, At the Threshold, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Printmaking Society @laprintmaking. This exhibition opened January 25th.

“Drawn to the idea of fostering a profound cross-cultural connection through the power of art, the Los Angeles Printmaking Society (LAPS) and the Artists Proof Studio (APS) in Johannesburg, South Africa, enthusiastically present a collaborative print exchange, At The Threshold, 2024.”

The grand opening reception was on Saturday, January 25 from 5-8 pm. Exhibition extended until May 31st, 2025.

This exhibition was made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Soft ground lithography with chine colle on paper

About the Work

Traditional Africans reach forward with a handshake to greet one another while clasping their forearm with the left. It signals they come in friendship and peace as no weapons can be hidden behind their backs.

This indicates sincerity of purpose as man acknowledges our obligation to safeguard and protect one another as well as our miraculous planet.

Using the technique of soft ground lithography with a chine-collé panel, I illustrate this greeting as we lean towards one another in a world that's AT THE THRESHOLD.

"In search for the ultimate markings that best describe the human spirit, our responsibility to one another and the well-being of our planet, I make art."
